Tuckpointing in Vallejo CA - fresh mortar joints that protect your brick
Mortar crumbling out of your brick joints? We cut out the worn mortar and refill the joints so your wall sheds water again.

When do brick mortar joints need tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing, also called repointing, means cutting the worn mortar out of a brick wall's joints and filling them with fresh mortar, and J&R Vallejo Concrete and Masonry does it for homes in Vallejo and many of the cities around it.
Most calls start with sand on the ground under a wall, joints that have sunk back behind the brick, or a chimney with gaps you can see from the street. The price moves with how tall the wall is, how much of the mortar is worn, what shape the brick is in and how easy the wall is to reach, since a chimney takes more setup than a garden wall. The schedule mostly turns on the size of the wall and on whether the city has to review the job first. I'll give you your own figure once I've seen the wall.
How we handle tuckpointing on your house
Before we touch the wall, I go over it with you and point out which joints are worn and which are still sound, so you only pay to redo what needs it. We cut the worn mortar back to solid mortar with care, because power tools take it out faster than hand tools but can chip the brick beside the joint, and once a brick edge is gone it stays gone. The usual guidance is that new mortar should be about as strong as the old or weaker, not harder, because mortar that's too strong can damage brick beyond repair, so we match the mix to what's already in your wall. Then we pack the joints, shape them to match the old ones and clean the face of the brick before we leave.
Repointing often turns up a few bricks that are cracked or flaking, and when it does we can take those out and set new ones as part of our brick repair work rather than leave a failing brick in a freshly pointed wall. If the drive in front of the house is cracked or heaving, we also lay driveway pavers, so the same crew can take care of both.
Why Vallejo homeowners call J&R Vallejo Concrete and Masonry for tuckpointing
I look at every wall myself
I come out to each job myself and show you the worn joints before we touch a brick, a habit I brought from laying brick and block commercially before I started this business in Vallejo in 2023. Our crew of masons does the work with me on site, so the person who walked the wall with you is there while it's pointed.
Repointing work you can see first
I'm glad to show you repointing we've done, because a good bricklayer isn't automatically a good repointer. Ask every mason you're considering for past repointing work, and look closely at the joints and the brick edges.
Fully licensed and insured
We're fully licensed and insured. California only lets an unlicensed person take on work worth less than $1,000, and only when it needs no permit and they have no one working for them, so ask for a license on anything bigger.
Vallejo permits filed for you
When a job needs a permit, we file it, line up the inspections and check with the city for your address before work starts. Vallejo reviews many simple projects at the counter, but others can take up to three weeks, so we sort that out before we give you a start date.
On a repointing job, the brick you keep matters more than the mortar you add. When you're ready, call (707) 310-8446 or send us a request with a few photos of the worn joints, the wall's rough size and your address.
Get a tuckpointing estimate at your property
We reply to every call and request within one business day, and the estimate is free with no obligation. After you send it, we set a time for me to come out, walk the wall with you and explain what I'd do and why.

Questions before you book tuckpointing
How much does tuckpointing cost in Vallejo?
Tuckpointing across the US usually costs about $5 to $25 per square foot of wall, and that's the market's range, not our price. Where your wall lands in it comes down to the height, wear and access I mentioned earlier, so I'll give you your own figure after I've measured the wall and looked at the joints.
How do I know if my mortar needs repointing?
Your mortar needs repointing when it has worn back more than 1/4 inch from the face of the brick, crumbles when you rub it, or has gaps and holes in the joints. Hairline cracks in the mortar, and cracks where the brick meets the mortar, are signs too. A house key held against a joint is an easy way to check the depth before you ask anyone for a price.
Does cracked mortar need to be fixed right away?
Not always, because many walls can handle the bit of extra moisture that gets in through minor cracks. That includes cavity walls, which have an air space behind the outer brick, and brick veneer over a frame wall. When I come out, I'll tell you whether yours can wait and why.
How long does mortar last before it needs tuckpointing?
Mortar usually lasts roughly 25 to 50 years, while the brick itself can last 100 years or more. That's why repointing exists, since it renews the joints every few decades and keeps the original brick in service. Those are national figures, so your own wall can be ahead of or behind them.
Is my Vallejo property in a historic district?
Vallejo has three historic districts on the National Register, Saint Vincent's Hill, the Architectural Heritage District and the Mare Island Historic Core. For landmarks and properties in those districts, the city points owners to its own historic review procedure, so it's worth checking whether it applies to your job before work starts. You can look up your address on the city's interactive zoning map or call the Planning Division at 707-648-4326.
What is the difference between tuckpointing and repointing?
Today most people use the two words for the same repair to worn joints. Tuckpointing also names an older finish, where the joint is filled flush in a color matched to the brick and a thin strip in a contrasting color is laid on top so the joints look very thin. If a quote says tuckpointing, ask which one it means, because the two look very different on a wall.
Other masonry work that pairs with repointing
- Brick repair
If some of your bricks are cracked, flaking or loose, replacing them during repointing keeps fresh mortar from being packed around a brick that's already failing.
- Driveway pavers
A cracked or heaving concrete drive can be replaced with pavers, which can be lifted and reset if a section settles, so repairs stay small and match the rest.
